Homeless Student Education / McKinney-Vento Program

Supporting the education of students experiencing homelessness

(lack a consistent, nighttime residence)

The McKinney-Vento Homeless Student Education Program provides help to students who live in any of the following situations:

Temporarily staying with others because of housing loss, economic hardship, or a similar reason
Emergency Shelter, Transitional Housing, Group Home or abandoned in Hospitals
Unsheltered (living in: a car, park, bus station, on the street, or inadequate housing including overcrowded, infestations, lack of heat, water, etc.)
Hotel / Motel, Trailer Parks or Campgrounds due to lake of alternative adequate accommodations

The HOPE Homeless Student Liaison provides:

Accountability for educational services in accordance with federal mandates
Case management of homeless students
Community resource referral information
Resources and access to training for HOPE and Learning Center staff

The HOPE Homeless Student Education Program provides qualifying Students with:

Learning Center enrollment assistance
Free breakfast/lunch program, at participating Learning Centers
Backpack and school supplies
Hygiene supplies
Transportation to and from the student’s Learning Center
Participation vouchers for HOPE sports, activities, and field trips at no cost to the student
Community Resources
Referrals to health care, dental, mental health, substance abuse, housing, and other appropriate services
Unaccompanied youth are informed of their status as independent students on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
