Homeless Student Education / McKinney-Vento Program

Supporting the education of students experiencing homelessness

(lack a consistent, nighttime residence)

The McKinney-Vento Homeless Student Education Program provides help to students who live in any of the following situations:

  • Temporarily staying with others because of housing loss, economic hardship, or a similar reason
  • Emergency Shelter, Transitional Housing, Group Home or abandoned in Hospitals
  • Unsheltered (living in: a car, park, bus station, on the street, or inadequate housing including overcrowded, infestations, lack of heat, water, etc.)
  • Hotel / Motel, Trailer Parks or Campgrounds due to lake of alternative adequate accommodations

 

The HOPE Homeless Student Liaison provides:

  • Accountability for educational services in accordance with federal mandates
  • Case management of homeless students
  • Community resource referral information
  • Resources and access to training for HOPE and Learning Center staff


 The HOPE Homeless Student Education Program provides qualifying Students with:

  • Learning Center enrollment assistance
  • Free breakfast/lunch program, at participating Learning Centers
  • Backpack and school supplies
  • Hygiene supplies
  • Transportation to and from the student’s Learning Center
  • Participation vouchers for HOPE sports, activities, and field trips at no cost to the student
  • Community Resources
  • Referrals to health care, dental, mental health, substance abuse, housing, and other appropriate services
  • Unaccompanied youth are informed of their status as independent students on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
